MEDEA

adapted and directed by Melissa Livingston

This  adaptation of Medea reimagines Euripides’ classic tragedy through a modern, feminist lens — one that explores the destructive intersection of love, power, and patriarchal control. This version honors the myth’s ancient roots while reframing Medea’s descent into vengeance as the devastating consequence of a woman stripped of agency and consumed by a lifetime of servitude to male authority. This production merges live performance, shadow puppetry, and silhouette choreography to create a hauntingly poetic visual language. The stage becomes a living canvas where gesture, rhythm, and projection blur the line between the physical and the mythic.

The work has been developed through an intensive workshop process with student artists at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, and will receive a full production this March. We have now been offered a venue at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the world’s largest and most prestigious platform for new and innovative theatre. Bringing this production to the Fringe would allow us to share this work with an international audience while offering an extraordinary professional opportunity for a new generation of theatre-makers.

As director and playwright, this invitation represents a significant artistic milestone. Even more meaningful, however, is the chance to bring a group of young artists—many of whom are presenting work of this scale for the first time—to an international stage where their voices, perspectives, and artistry can be seen and taken seriously.

This production also serves as a capstone for two exceptional student designers completing their Senior Projects. Scenic Designer Aven Lancaster and Costume Designer Emma Li have crafted bold, original designs that are integral to the show’s visual storytelling. Their work exemplifies the future of our field: imaginative, interdisciplinary, and socially engaged.

The only barrier standing between this production and Edinburgh is funding. We are seeking support to cover essential travel and lodging costs for the company during the festival. While donations of any amount are deeply appreciated, securing 5–10 lead donations of $5,000-$10,000 would allow us to reach our goal quickly and make this opportunity possible. All donations are tax-deductible, and contributors will receive official documentation acknowledging their support.

Time is critical. Funds must be secured by mid-February in order to confirm travel and lodging and move forward with confidence. With your support, this production can reach a global audience, amplify emerging voices, and demonstrate what is possible when young artists are given space, trust, and opportunity.

Your investment is not only in a single production—it is an investment in the future of theatre.
